Frequently Asked Questions

This rinse was created out of need when even the gentlest of dog shampoos were too harsh. After many years of making this herbal infusion for my own dogs—who both had very sensitive skin—I wanted to offer the same product that became a staple in our household. A botanical rinse made with thoughtfully chosen ingredients and nothing unnecessary.

Rather than relying on fragrances, detergents, or synthetic ingredients, Forest Dog is handcrafted in small batches using whole organic herbs slowly infused into raw organic apple cider vinegar over several weeks.
-
Dogs have an incredibly sensitive sense of smell, so essential oils can not only be very overstimulating for dogs, but many essential oils can be irritating to sensitive skin too. Forest Dog relies on whole organic botanicals instead of concentrated essential oils

Your dog’s skin is home to billions of naturally occurring bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that make up the skin microbiome. While that may sound surprising, these microbes are an essential part of healthy skin.
A balanced skin microbiome helps support the skin’s natural barrier, discourages the overgrowth of harmful microbes, and plays an important role in maintaining overall skin health.
Many conventional grooming products are designed to strip away dirt, oils, and odors. While cleansing certainly has its place, frequent use of harsh detergents or strong disinfectants can also remove beneficial oils and disrupt the skin’s natural microbial balance.
Forest Dog takes a different approach.
Instead of relying on harsh cleansers or synthetic fragrances, Forest Dog is a gentle botanical rinse made with organic herbs slowly infused into raw organic apple cider vinegar. It’s designed to complement your dog’s skin by supporting a healthy skin environment rather than simply stripping everything away.
Healthy skin isn’t sterile—it’s balanced.

Weekly is perfectly appropriate if your dog swims, plays in the mud, hikes, or simply gets dirty and you want to finish with a soothing botanical rinse.
For dogs with relatively clean coats who mostly lounge around the house, every 4–6 weeks is a wonderful maintenance routine.
There’s no strict schedule—the rinse is designed to gently support the skin and coat whenever your dog could use a refresh.
-
No. Forest Dog is a concentrated herbal rinse, not a cleanser.
Use it after bathing, after rinsing off mud, after swimming, or anytime you simply rinse your dog with water. It leaves beneficial botanical compounds on the coat to support healthy skin—and it can also be used in place of dog shampoo altogether.

When concentrated, you’ll notice the natural scent of raw apple cider vinegar.
Once diluted and applied to the coat, the vinegar scent fades as it dries, leaving behind a clean, fresh-smelling coat without perfumes or artificial fragrances.

However, avoid applying it to open wounds, the eyes, or inside the ears. If your dog has extensive skin disease or severe irritation, consult your veterinarian before use.

Because Forest Dog is concentrated, one bottle makes many diluted applications.
The exact number depends on your dog’s size and coat length, but most owners find a bottle lasts considerably longer than a ready-to-use rinse.
